There are so many diet plans that come and go; cutting out food groups, only eating certain foods, counting calories, fasting… the list goes on. But fad diets are ‘fad’ for a reason, as they are often hard to sustain in the long-term and your body needs a variety of nutrients from a wide selection of food groups to be able to function at its best.

There is such a wealth of information about what’s healthy and what’s not, but we believe there is a simple way to eat healthily: eat real food. If you base your meals, snacks and drinks around ingredients that have come from nature and are unprocessed/minimally processed, then you can’t go far wrong.

Eating in this way will help provide your body with the nutrients it needs, while avoiding filling your body with heavily processed food that can be damaging to your health. You’ll notice a difference in the way you feel – more energetic, alert and focused, instead of sluggish, tired and lethargic. This way of eating also naturally lends itself to an improved body shape because, by avoiding heavily processed foods and artificial ingredients, you will naturally be cutting back on your intake of refined sugar and grains, salt and unhealthy fats.

Fill your plate with the following types of food and follow these general guidelines:

  • Fresh meat and fish
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Whole grains (whole wheat, whole oats, brown rice, brown pasta, wholegrain bread, whole wheat flour, etc)
  • Swap your vegetable cooking oil for cold-pressed rapeseed oil
  • Drink water and herbal teas
  • Cook your meals from scratch where possible
  • Eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full

And don’t forget – everything in balance. There is absolutely nothing wrong with indulging in a treat every now and then – life’s too short, so enjoy it without guilt! A good general guide is 80/20 – eating well about 80% of the time and allowing for treats 20% of the time. If you allow yourself guilt-free treats, then you’re more likely to stick to healthy eating in the long-term.
