Wellbeing is a word we hear a lot of nowadays, but what does it really mean?
If you look up the word 'wellbeing' in the Cambridge Dictionary, it says: "the state of feeling healthy and happy". How simple a statement, and how appealing does it sound!
Wellbeing can encompass many things; health, fitness, the food we eat, how we treat our bodies and our emotional state of mind.
But essentially, we think wellbeing boils down to feeling content, comfortable, happy and balanced, in both our minds and bodies.
Obviously that sounds very appealing, but does wellbeing matter?
Absolutely. If your body and mind are frazzled, not only will this make you feel rubbish, but over time it’s going to take its toll on your health and/or emotional state and this will lead to burn-out in the long run. Eventually, something has to give.
Modern life doesn’t make a good state of wellbeing easy; hectic lives, stress, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, poor diets and putting ourselves last is considered the norm these days, which all takes its toll on our bodies and our emotional state and puts our wellbeing out of whack.
It’s all too easy to put everything first before yourself, but it is so important to take time out to look after yourself – to sleep, to chill, to de-stress, to unwind, to laugh, to move and to reset. And if you and your body are happy and healthy, it’s easier to keep all your balls in the air.
Simply being aware of your wellbeing can help you make positive changes. Have a think – does your body feel content, comfortable, happy and balanced? Does your mind feel content, comfortable, happy and balanced? Is your breathing slow and easy, or short and sharp? If something doesn’t feel quite right, what can be done to make it feel better?
Look after your mind and body, and your mind and body will look after you.
