face oil versus moisturiser

Face oil V. moisturiser; what role each of them plays and why you need both in your routine

Our skin goes through many changes and with the addition of changing seasons, environmental aggressors, diet and hormones, our complexion can become dry and/or dehydrated.

Although our first thought is to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise, sometimes a face oil may actually be your best bet. Face oils can provide a whole host of skin-loving benefits that moisturisers can't and despite the urban skincare myth, they're not just for dry skin. So, how do we know which is best; moisturiser or face oil?

The first step is determining whether your skin is dry or dehydrated - or both. If your skin is dry, it is lacking oil and if your skin is dehydrated, it is lacking water. Face oils are obviously oil-based and will put back the oil that is lacking in the skin, while moisturisers are water-based and will help to rehydrate the skin.

While moisturisers and oils can both contain active ingredients, the concentration can be much higher in oils, giving them the edge for antioxidants and fatty acids (the Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil is particularly rich in both of these). In comparison, moisturisers have a cocktail of fats, actives and a 60-80% water content, which means they are very efficient at hydrating skin. Look for a moisturiser containing a humectant (which not only draws moisture into the skin but also locks it in) such as hyaluronic acid, which can be found in our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream.

At Willowberry, we always say that your moisturiser is like drinking your 8 glasses of water a day for hydration, and your face oil is like eating your 5 fruit and veg a day, for your nutrients.

To get the maximum benefits from moisturisers and oils, it's often best to use them together. You don't need to wait until your skin is dry or dehydrated - using a face oil and moisturiser as part of your daily skincare routine will help to keep both skin issues at bay, for a healthy, nourished glow.
