Skincare routines for morning and evening - what your skin needs at different times of the day

To get your best skin, a daily morning and evening skincare routine is vital. A different approach should be taken to your morning and evening routines; The morning is for giving your face a gentle cleanse and making sure it’s nourished, hydrated and protected for the day ahead, while being well-prepped for any make-up you may put on. The night is about taking the day off with a deep cleanse to remove dirt, bacteria and make-up, then using targeted treatments for any specific concerns and using richer formulas to work their magic overnight.

Here’s our guide to good skincare routines for morning and evening:

MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE:

For many of us, time is of the essence in the morning but getting your skin on the right track needn’t take more than a few minutes.

TOP TIP:
One skincare hack we love is to have a cup of hot water with lemon while you get ready. This works to cleanse your system from the inside out and gets you off to the right start with a hit of hydration.

CLEANSE
Begin with a cleanse: you may not think that your skin needs cleaning when all you’ve done is lie in bed but dead skin cells, dust, sebum and sweat can all accumulate overnight. Besides which, washing your face stimulates circulation, sending the blood to the surface making you look more awake and giving your skin more of that longed-for glow. It also preps your skin nicely, ready to drink in your moisturiser and provide a smooth base for make-up.

EXFOLIATE
Opt for a daily liquid exfoliator that is gentle on skin. Avoid anything that strips the skin or makes it feel tight; you don’t want to use anything too harsh that could compromise your skin’s delicate barrier.

EYES

EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE

The latter part of the day is when you can really give your skin some attention. You can largely follow your morning routine, with the following tweaks:

DOUBLE CLEANSE
Here is where the double cleanse comes in: this simply means cleansing your skin twice: first of all by removing your make-up and secondly by washing your face. Begin by removing any make-up either with a regular cleanser or with a make-up remover. Then go back in with a second cleanse to give your skin a deeper clean to evict any remaining make-up plus SPF, dirt, bacteria and pollution. Our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Cleansing Balm actually doubles up as a rich face mask – just apply a generous layer of the balm to cleansed skin, leave on for 10-30 minutes (or longer if you wish) then remove any remaining product with a face cloth.

RICHER MOISTURISER
Swap out your lighter day moisturiser for a richer formula that can work its magic during the night. Or use your day cream – such as our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream and layer it with a few drops of Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil/Sensitive Face Oil for a richer night-time treatment. Don’t use a moisturiser with an SPF incorporated for your night-time routine though (our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream doesn’t contain SPF as we always recommend using a separate SPF to your moisturiser), as this can could cause spots.

And finally…sleep. Arguably the best beauty treatment of all.
