Why you should be nourishing your skin, not stripping it

Balance is everything. In life and in skincare.

The best way to keep your skin healthy and looking its glowing best is through gentle cleansing and moisturising, not by scrubbing over-enthusiastically or by using harsh treatments that can damage the skin’s natural barrier.

You may be of an age to remember a time as a teenager when skincare meant trying to see off potential breakouts and oily skin by treating your complexion with what can only be described as aggression. Remember the cleanser with the eye-wateringly astringent blue liquid and chemical scent? Or the exfoliating scrub with crushed apricot kernels that would sandblast dead skin cells off?

Less is more

As we get older, it’s easy to become seduced by treatments and products that promise to radically perk up our complexions. Powerful skincare solutions such as in-clinic peels and at-home retinol products certainly have their place and can work wonders in the right hands and in the right formulations. Everything in moderation, however. Sometimes we may become a little too eager to jump straight to the hard-hitters in a bid to see instant, dramatic results, but a regular, nourishing skincare routine can be seriously effective in giving skin its glow and keeping it on an even keel.

Protect the protective barrier

One word that is having its turn in the skincare spotlight at the moment is ‘microbiome’. The word itself describes the microscopic organisms including (good) bacteria that live in and on our bodies. In the context of skincare, the microbiome is essentially the skin’s protective barrier, its first line of defence against environmental aggressors; (bad) bacteria; viruses; and infection.

Excessive cleansing and over-use of harsh products can adversely affect the microbiome, leaving our skin vulnerable and sensitised, perhaps red and irritated. Using lots of different products with lots of different ingredients can overwhelm and irritate, so when it comes to maintaining a healthy microbiome, adopting a pared back routine can help. Beneficial, barrier-friendly ingredients to look out for include vitamin E, fatty acids, nutrient rich oils and hyaluronic acid.

Nourish your skin

At Willowberry our high-performance skincare is all about nutritious natural ingredients; our formulations focus on vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids to protect skin’s natural barrier function. Gently extracted natural oils retain maximum nutrients from the plant and our whole philosophy revolves around taking care of your skin to allow it to look the best it can.

Hydration is key and can be achieved through face oils and even your cleanser, as well as your moisturiser. Our Willowberry Nutrient Boost Cleansing Balm is a luxurious balm suitable for daily use, which cleanses skin without leaving it feeling stripped thanks to the inclusion of nourishing natural oils and butters. It also removes make-up so there’s no need for extra products. Follow with either Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream or Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil, or both, according to your personal preference; both protect skin’s natural barrier function whilst leaving skin smooth, nourished and with a radiant glow.

Proving that there is power in gentleness.
