How to adapt your skincare routine for Spring

Don’t you agree that this time of year feels like a new beginning? That it has more of a new year vibe than 1st January with its forced resolutions and detox plans? Spring seems so much more suited as a time of renewal and reawakening. A time for fresh starts and looking forward.

This change in the seasons can be the perfect time to revisit your skincare regime. Take stock of what is working for you, cast off what no longer serves its purpose and get set to glow.

Here’s our simple guide on how to clean up, clear out and hit refresh on your skincare routine this Spring.

Exfoliate to get rid of winter skin
Skin that has been blasted by centrally heated houses and buffeted by wind and rain can really benefit from a little extra TLC at this time of year. Emerging from the winter months, our complexions may be looking a little on the dull side, prone to dryness and flakiness. Gentle, regular exfoliation can make the world of difference, transforming lacklustre skin into a state of glowy radiance. Don’t be tempted to reach for harsh exfoliators that can do more harm than good; instead look for a liquid acid exfoliator at the right strength for your skin.

Willowberry PHA Liquid Exfoliator uses polyhydroxy acids, the kind best friend of the acid world and a gentler alternative to AHAs and BHA. Our Exfoliator is suitable for even sensitive skin and optimal for mature skin as PHAs are humectants, so they keep skin moisturised and help support the collagen matrix. Used every day to buff away dead skin cells, it helps your skin look its best: smoother, brighter, hydrated and radiant.

Spring hydration
Keeping skin moisturised all year round is key, especially as we get older. Hyaluronic acid, famously able to hold 1,000 times its weight in water, is just the thing to keep winter-depleted skin plumped and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our bodies but starts to decline as the years go by. Choosing a moisturiser that contains hyaluronic acid will help to ensure that the moisture levels in our skin are topped up. Willowberry Nutrient Boost Day Cream combines hyaluronic acid with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids to help protect skin’s natural barrier function for smooth, soothed, nourished skin with a healthy-looking glow.

Nourish deeply with a face oil
To bring a healthy glow to your complexion, face oils are your best bet. Willowberry Nutrient Boost Face Oil and Willowberry Sensitive Face Oil are suitable for all skin types including oily and sensitive. Ultra-light and easily absorbed they nourish with rosehip, chia seed and vitamin E. Radiance in a bottle, they also work brilliantly under make-up.

Pack in the antioxidants
Antioxidants give skin a boost and provide a little extra help against sun damage, pigmentation, and pollution when you are spending more time outside. They protect cells by neutralising the free radicals caused by sun exposure and pollution (and stress) which can contribute to uneven skin texture, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. Willowberry skincare is packed with skin-loving antioxidants including chia seed oil, vitamin E, green tea, rosehip oil and sweet almond oil.

Always SPF
We know you know this but still, it’s always worth saying. Getting into the habit of applying an SPF of at least 30 (preferably 50) every day is one of the single most effective ways of keeping your skin looking its best as we get older. As Spring unfolds and we start to spend more time outside again, daily SPF should absolutely be as much of a habit as cleaning your teeth.

Spring clean your skincare
It may be that there’s a particular pot of skincare magic that you save for special occasions, or a product that is fine but doesn’t make your heart race. Whatever the reason, our shelves and make-up bags are often home to items past their sell-by date. And while it may seem frivolous and wasteful to throw them away, products that have been open for a long period of time can harbour bacteria that has no place in anybody’s skincare routine. Experts advise that anything that’s been open for 6-12 months should go.

Here’s to Spring, to another year and to remembering that life’s too short to save the good stuff for best.
